NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION MOURNS THE PASSING OF OUR SAINTED SUPERVISOR – MOTHER SARAH ANN BRAGG GASTON
—————————————————
“Oh, I want to see Him, look upon His face, there to sing forever of His saving grace; On the streets of glory let me lift my voice, Cares all past, home at last, ever to rejoice….”
—————————————————
Whereas, death has removed from our midst a genuine mother in Zion and a longtime laborer in the Lord’s vineyard, Bishop Timothy Titus Scott, Prelate, and the constituents of the Northern Mississippi Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, Church of God in Christ, unite in fervent prayer as we mourn the passing of our sainted mother and Supervisor of Women’s Auxiliaries, MOTHER SARAH ANN BRAGG GASTON.

Mother Gaston was born the eighth child to Mary Berry and Albert Bragg in Lexington, Mississippi, where they attended the Historic Sweet Canaan COGIC (2nd established COGIC Church). In 1955, the Bragg family relocated to Chattanooga, TN, where young Sarah attended All Saints Academy and graduated with honors from Riverside High School. Awarded an academic scholarship, Mother Gaston continued her education at Tennessee State University in Nashville and later Memphis State University (renamed The University of Memphis) in Memphis, Tennessee, where she graduated.

Saved at the tender age of 8, Mother Gaston’s activeness in ministry began in her youth, serving the local church in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as choir president and director. She was the first to organize the Young Women’s Christian Council (YWCC) in Chattanooga and became the first Youth Congress Queen in the Tennessee Second Jurisdiction.

In 1970, Mother Gaston was united in holy matrimony to Elder Leon Gaston. One daughter, Angela Robinette, and an adopted daughter, Carlotta Powell, were added to this union.

As she grew in grace, Mother Gaston became a WARRIOR for the FAITH, and a SOLDIER in the GOSPEL. An Evangelist-Missionary in the church for nearly 50 years (licensed by the late Supervisor Fannie Page, Tennessee Second Jurisdiction in 1969), Mother Gaston was noted for being a woman of innovation and dynamics, giving of herself and talents without reservation or selfishness. She was a firm advocate for Sunday School and a woman of God given over to seasoned prayer. In the life of the church, Mother Gaston served in several roles over the years, including First Lady of the Powerhouse Church of God in Christ (Elder Leon Gaston, Pastor); Sunday School Teacher; District YPWW Chairlady; Jurisdictional YPWW Chairlady; Chairperson of Tupelo District Women’s Department; Administrative Assistant in the Music Department; Elect Lady of Evangelism; Co-Chairperson of Finance and Platform Chair of Jurisdictional Women’s Department.

In 1996, Mother Gaston was formally installed as our most beloved and cherished Jurisdictional Supervisor. Shortly thereafter, she was appointed to the Executive Board for the International Department of Women under the auspices of General Supervisor Emeritus, Mother Willie Mae Rivers. Whatever the position or capacity, Mother Gaston served with duty, honor, and distinction. She loved speaking and imparting wisdom into the lives of missionaries, wives and all women in general. She took her vow and service unto the Lord seriously, and she did not waver in her walk. Without question, Mother Gaston was a light of encouragement and a beacon of inspiration for members of the local, district, jurisdictional and international church.

Our most fervent prayers and sincere condolences are with Pastor Leon Gaston, her husband of 48 years, daughters Angela and Carlotta, and the entire Gaston and Bragg families, the Powerhouse COGIC family, the Saints of the Northern Mississippi Jurisdiction, the International Department of Women, and all lives touched by the light and love of Mother Sarah Ann Bragg Gaston. May God bless, strengthen and keep you, and grant you peace.
