It is with Regret we Announce the Passing of Reverend Clay Evans | Jun 23, 1925 – Nov 27, 2019 https://nationwideministry.com/events/passingofrevclayevans/ https://nationwideministry.com/events/passingofrevclayevans/#respond Wed, 27 Nov 2019 20:57:31 +0000 http://www.nationwideministry.com/?post_type=ajde_events&p=6502 Evangelist and civil rights leader Reverend Clay Evans founded the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois in 1958 and was the founding national board chairman of Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity, later changed to People United to Serve Humanity) in 1971.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLVHk0rxLxQ[/embedyt]

Rev. Clay Evans was born in Brownsville, Tennessee on June 23, 1925. After graduating from Carver High School, Evans attended seminary school at the Chicago Baptist Institute and later at the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Chicago Divinity School.  In 1950 he was ordained a Baptist minister and eight years later founded the Fellowship Baptist Church (or “The Ship”). His popular sermons were broadcast on radio and television, generating his fame throughout the Midwest and into the South.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7AGSt6v64Q[/embedyt]

In 1965, Rev. Evans joined Rev. Jesse Jackson to promote the civil rights movement then emerging in Chicago.  In 1971 they founded Operation PUSH, which encouraged black self-help.  Between 1971 and 1976, Rev. Evans served as chairman of the organization and currently serves as its chairman emeritus.

Rev. Evans is also the founding president of the Broadcast Ministers Alliance of Chicago, organized in 1975 by a group of leading pastors who sponsored weekly radio and television broadcasts. The group is socially active in the areas of healthcare, voter registration, and religious protection. In 1990 Rev. Evans released the first of a series of successful gospel and inspirational recordings. His 1995 recording I’ve Got a Testimony earned him the Stellar Gospel Music Award for Album of the Year in 1996.

In 2000, Rev. Evans retired as pastor of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church after 42 years as its principal minister.  Upon his retirement he was honored by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin during a formal ceremony in the U.S. Senate.

His most famous mantra was “It is not secret what God can do.” We will forever be a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, family patriarch and church father. He was a leading servant of God, a man of great faith, a servants servant, a leaders, leader, a friend to all of mankind.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJo7C6qu0kA[/embedyt]

He will forever be known as a civil rights leader (who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King and Reverend Jesse Jackson), gospel music pioneer, civic leader, community staple, and trusted counselor to all including Presidents, Governors, Mayors, and anyone in need of advice. He was a convener, an ecumenical bridge builder, problem solver, and humanitarian. He will be forever be known throughout the world as The Godfather of ministers, preachers, & pastors everywhere. He took his final breath on earth but his legacy will live on forever through his biological family, his friends, his spiritual family, over 100 spiritual sons and daughters, and millions of people around the world who have been touched by his life and work.

His contributions are countless, his awards are innumerable, and his impact is immeasurable. His famous words are those of The Gospel Of John 9:4 “Work while it is day for the night comes when no man can work.” “I don’t want to rust out sitting around, I want to wear out working.” He leaves this world empty, leaving our lives and society full of all of the goodness God gave him to give to us. This mighty man passed from labor to reward on today. We love him forever! Details and Arrangements are forthcoming.

It is With Regret that We Announce the Passing of Dr. Charles E. Booth https://nationwideministry.com/events/passingofdrcharlesebooth03232019/ https://nationwideministry.com/events/passingofdrcharlesebooth03232019/#respond Mon, 25 Mar 2019 04:32:31 +0000 http://www.nationwideministry.com/?post_type=ajde_events&p=5727 Preaching the Gospel is a life calling for the Reverend Dr. Charles E. Booth. He is the Senior Pastor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and fully affiliated Professor of Preaching at the Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Education, particularly Christian education, also is a very high priority for this pastor.  Dr. Booth has traveled the world preaching and teaching the Gospel.  He has also preached on college, university, and seminary campuses throughout this country.

Dr. Booth earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Howard University and his Master of Divinity degree from Eastern Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio where he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Charles E. Booth is an author, publishing his book,Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation in the African-American Preaching Tradition (Urban Ministries) in 2000.  The Prophetic Voice: Words for Today was released in 2011.  His most recent publication, released in 2014 -Stronger in my Broken Places; Claiming a Life of Fullness in God.

Dr. Booth is a former member of the advisory board of The African American Pulpit and has contributed writings in multiple publications, such as From One Brother to Another: Voices of African American Men; The Irresistible Urge to Preach: A Collectible of African American “Call” Stories; Outstanding Black Sermons, volumes III and IV; and Wisdom of the Ages: The Mystique of the African American Preacher.  Dr. Booth’s biography and a sermon appear in Preaching with Sacred Fire: An Anthology of African-American Sermons, 1750-Present.

The Baltimore native has devoted the past 40 years to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where he has overseen substantial church growth.

In 1993, Dr. Booth founded the Mount Olivet Christian Academy, later renamed the Gloria S. Friend Christian Academy in honor of its first administrator.  The Academy, which has grades kindergarten through sixth, stresses excellence in academics, Christian education, and African and African American history.  It is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education.  During Dr. Booth’s tenure, Mt. Olivet raised $2.1 million to build the 100-seat Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Chapel, an administrative wing and 12 classrooms, and to expand the fellowship center, along with other facility improvements.  Mt. Olivet is now in the planning stages of building an $8 million Family Life Center.  Dr. Booth leads his congregation by focusing on providing spiritual nurturing and information.  “The pulpit is no place for personal opinion,” he said to attendees of the African American Leadership Workshop in 2007. “The pulpit is the place for propagation of the Gospel.”

Dr. Booth has been a guest preacher to enlisted service men and women and their families in Germany; the North American preacher at the Baptist World Youth Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and a guest revivalist and preacher at churches and conferences throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Central America and Africa.  He has been the guest preacher and lecturer at the historic Hampton Ministers’ Conference in 1984, 1995 and 1999.

Dr. Booth has been listed in Who’s Who Among African Americans and in Ebony magazine’s Honor Roll of Preachers.  He received the 1999 James E. Stamps Alumni Recognition Award for outstanding contributions to young people attending historically black colleges and universities; the 1999 Alpha Phi Alpha and the Alpha Lambda Rho Chapter’s Vertner Woodson Tandy Award for dedicated community service.  The Columbus Ohio Education Association awarded the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award to Dr. Booth for his documented commitment to local and global communities around the issues of unemployment, homelessness, education, and health.
